Office of Elections

The Office of Elections has moved!

There are three choices for voting (choose one):

  1. In-Person Absentee = Early Voting
  2. Mail Absentee = Vote-at-Home
  3. On Election Day, Nov. 8
  4. Ballot Drop-off Stations

This option is available to all James City County registered voters at the James City County Vote Center, located at the James City County Office of Elections, 4095 Ironbound Road. An ID is required and you do not have to have an application in advance for this method. Dates and hours are listed below.

In-person Early/Absentee Voting

The James City County Vote Center at James City County Office of Elections, 4095 Ironbound Road, is the only designated location in James City County for in-person absentee/early voting.

Saturday, Nov. 5 is the last day to vote by absentee ballot in person at the James City County Vote Center at James City County Office of Elections, 4095 Ironbound Road. The office will be open 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. An ID is required.

If you change your mind and want to vote in-person after you have been mailed a ballot, it is permitted. However, the process will take additional time and the ballot you will be given is the same ballot you were issued in the mail. Voters who change their mind about voting by mail have two options, only available at the James City County Vote Center, 4095 Ironbound Road:

  1. If you have your ballot, you will be asked to surrender your blank, unopened ballot to the Precinct Chief. They will make their necessary documentation and hand you a new, In-Person ballot. An ID is required.
  2. If you do not have your ballot, you will be offered a Provisional Ballot. This will ensure that there is only one ballot per person. Provisional ballots are then reviewed and counted at the Canvass by the Electoral Board after noon on Monday, Nov. 14.

About the Director of Elections

The Director of Elections registers voters and updates records of voters for changes of address and administers elections with the Electoral Board, whose primary responsibility is to oversee the elections. The Director is appointed by the Electoral Board, whose members are appointed by the Circuit Court Judge for 3-year staggered terms. Two members represent the political party receiving the most votes in the last gubernatorial election and 1 member represents the party receiving the second-highest votes.
